Last weekend when I went to Aldi, I looked at the ham steaks and noticed they were $3-5 depending on weight. I hate to spend that much on meat that I will just use for one meal! So, I had an idea...in the special purchase freezer, they had spiral hams (half a ham) for $1.29/lb,so I bought a seven pound ham! I knew we couldn't possibly eat this in once sitting, so I baked it according to package directions, and froze portions in meal size freezer bags. We ended up with eight bags! Not bad for $9.95 ($1.24/meal)! I've never cooked ham before, but it tastes amazing and it was really easy.
For dinner tonight we had some of this ham, oatmeal dinner rolls, and oven fries. The oatmeal dinner rolls did not turn out as expected. I think I could have thrown they through the cold winter window, they were so dense. The taste was great, but the texture... I like my dinner rolls to be light and fluffy. These things were more like bagels disguised as dinner rolls! We ate them anyway, because I'm that cheap.
The great thing about the oven fries, besides the taste, is the cost! I got a 10 pound bag of potatoes for $1.39. So, if you imagine these potatoes will last for about 10 meals, that's only $0.14 a meal!
Here's the recipe for the oven fries:
4 potatoes
3 Tbl canola oil
1 1/2 tsp seasoning salt
Optional seasonings: garlic/paremsan
- Wash the potatoes and cut into fat french fries
- Toss with oil and seasonings
- Place in single layer on baking sheet
- Bake @ 350 until tender (40 minutes?)
